Big Shocker--Changed my Fitness Plan This Week

Yeah, here I go again. I changed my mind on what to do this week, mainly do to some online Cathe friends who advised me to go ahead with the Slow & Heavy strength training. So here's what I'm doing this week:

MONDAY..............Slow & Heavy Chest & Back (Cathe Friedrich)
TUESDAY.............Step Jump & Pump cardio premix (Cathe)
WEDNESDAY.......Slow & Heavy Legs & Shoulders (Cathe)
THURSDAY..........Kick Max (Cathe)
FRIDAY.................Slow & Heavy Triceps & Biceps (Cathe)
SATURDAY...........Walk or 4DS Lower Intensity Step cardio (Cathe)
SUNDAY................Rest

I just finished today's workout (S&H Chest & Back) and I am shaking like crazy. I am even having trouble typing this because my muscles are so wobbly. Whew. Feels good to do a killer workout, though. I can't wait to boost my strength back up as I've gotten a bit weaker lately.

I've added the new rotation plan (alternating S&H with Amy Bento's Slo-Mo Strength Challenge) to my "Current Rotations" document and my "Workout Rotations" list on the Tools page.

This Week's Fitness Plan

I'm getting back to a serious rotation this week now that the July 4th party is over. Here's next week:

MONDAY...........Pyramid Upper Body (Cathe Friedrich)

TUESDAY..........Step Jump & Pump cardio premix (Cathe)

WEDNESDAY.....Pyramid Lower Body (Cathe)

THURSDAY........Kick Punch & Crunch (Cathe)

FRIDAY.............Kettlebell Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Vol. 1 (Sarah Lurie)

SATURDAY........Walk or 4DS Higher Intensity Step cardio(Cathe)

SUNDAY............Rest

This is part of a month-long "Ready for Road Trip Rotation" I've put together to prepare for the August Cathe Road Trip. I've added this rotation to my Current Rotation document as well as the regular Workout Rotations document on the Tools page. You can see I'm going heavy on the Cathe workouts, as planned. If you've never done a Cathe workout, you've got to give her a try--she's incredible!

New Blog Updates

OK, so I'm supposed to be cleaning today...and I have been--honestly--just not as much as I planned. I've been procrastinating a lot by fiddling with my blogs again. The changes are small and not immediately noticeable, though, so I thought I'd quickly mention them. First, I now have a favicon--a little icon up there^^^by the URL. In my case it's a tiny fig picture (of course). I put it on all my blogs so they match that way. Also, I changed the comments so that you can now see the comments inline with the posts when you go to comment. We'll see how that does. I love fiddling with stuff!

Preparing for July 4th and August Road Trip

Today I finally sent in my "Who's Who Form" for the August Cathe Road Trip. I also sent in this picture. That might mean I should straighten my hair for the road trip. Lately I've been letting my hair air-dry in that crazy Robert Plant frizzy waves look. Hmm, I also look very pale in that pic. Of course, I am very pale, so I might as well look like myself.

Anyway, I did at least work out today. I did Sarah Lurie's Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Volume 1. I love using kettlebells. I want more kettlebell workouts but I'm going to wait until after the Cathe Road Trip, since I want to do more Cathe stuff for now.

Tomorrow I'm going to continue the flurry of cleaning. The house is pretty good already, but I'm going ahead and doing a big extra clean while I'm in the mood. I also hope to fit in some fun cardio (not just cleaning cardio).

Not on Plan

OK, my workouts have not gone even remotely to plan lately. We are planning a big 4th of July party, so I've been preparing for that--which so far means a lot of time scrubbing the house top to bottom (though, really, no one will probably go upstairs, but a good clean never hurts). In the mean time, my oldest son's first year of school finally ended last week. Also, we're having a bunch of concrete ripped up and new paths and a new stone patio put in. So we had paving guys here all day today. Tomorrow I have an orthodontist appointment. Basically it's just one thing after another.

OK, enough of the lousy excuses. We'll see if I can get back on track soon. This week I'm not formally planning my workouts--just doing what I can, what I want, when I can and when I want. Next week I'm starting a 3-day split for the rest of the month.

This Week's Fitness Plan

Here's this week's rotation. I decided to go ahead and do full body workouts. Today I did a premix of Step Blast, and I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to do a premix from the same DVD tomorrow which alternates step combos from Step Blast with weights from Step, Jump & Pump.

MONDAY.............Step Blast Combo 1, 2, 3 premix (Cathe Friedrich)
TUESDAY............Step, Jump & Pump/Step Blast step & weights circuit premix (Cathe)
WEDNESDAY.....Kick Punch & Crunch (Cathe)
THURSDAY.........Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Vol. 1 (Sarah Lurie)
FRIDAY...............4DS Higher Intensity Step Cardio (Cathe)
SATURDAY.........Supersets or Push Pull (Cathe)
SUNDAY..............Rest

Hurray for Cathe workouts!

Ooh, keep forgetting to mention--I weighed a couple days ago and was down another 0.8 lb. Better than gaining!

Preparing for the August Road Trip!

I'm getting ready for the August Cathe Road Trip, so I'm going to start an all-Cathe (or almost all) rotation. I might do one more full body rotation for this week and then start next week using Slow & Heavy for a while along with Cathe kickboxing and step aerobics. Either way, I think tomorrow will be Step Blast, one of my very favorite Cathe workouts. I'm so excited to get to work out with Cathe in August!

I had thought about going for a jog today (wobbly knees be darned) but I'm not keen on running when it's thundering and raining so hard, so never mind. My knees will be glad. I'll stick with the planned rest day.

So I'll start the almost-all-Cathe rotation tomorrow. Here's a tentative plan:
MONDAY.............Step Blast (Cathe Friedrich)
TUESDAY............Push Pull (Cathe)
WEDNESDAY.....Kick Punch & Crunch (Cathe)
THURSDAY.........Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Vol. 1 (Sarah Lurie)
FRIDAY...............4DS Higher Intensity Step Cardio (Cathe)
SATURDAY.........Supersets (Cathe)

If I do Slow & Heavy instead, it will be the same cardio but S&H for the weights days instead.

Or, like I said, I might put off the S&H and start it next week to do it all of July (or might alternate it with Amy's Slo-Mo or Cathe's Gym Styles). Any opinions?

This is the Chosen Template

Well, I like this current template enough to keep it for awhile, and I've gotten some good feedback about it. I got the basic template from Our Blogger Templates. The original looks like this one. I did change it just a bit, changing the picture to the figs and adding my title to the picture. I also widened it a bit and added a few of my favorite widgets. In the meantime I also changed the templates on my Lainiefig and Dreamer Fig blogs. On those I hardly altered the HTML at all because I really liked the templates I found.

I am still sore from Tuesday's Kettlebell workout so today I modified my plan and just did a short upper body workout and a segment of Cathe's Stretch Max. I haven't decided yet what I'll be doing tomorrow.

Still Fiddling With Templates

I'm experimenting with yet another template for the blog. Here's one rough draft and here's another one. I would like something a little less busy than this one.

As you can see, I love fig pictures lately.

Finally Did a Kettlebell Workout

Today I finally dragged out one of my kettlebell CDs and both my little kettlebells (only a 10-pounder and a 15-pounder) to give them a try. It was actually pretty fun and my legs were sore afterwards, so I knew I at least got a great lower body workout. I used the 10-pounder for the first section and the 15-pounder for the second two sections. I'd like to get a 20-pounder soon because I know for some of those exercises I could have gone heavier.

The workout was Kettlebells the Iron Core Way, Volume 1 with Sarah Lurie. It was not the finest production I've seen, but it was a pretty good workout. My legs were shaking afterward as I had to go upstairs to get Ewan down for his nap. After I put him down, I did a stretch with my foam roller (the DVD didn't include a stretch). I look forward to doing Volume 2 soon. I'm also looking for other good kettlebell workouts. I loved swinging that sucker around and the great moves. I was a little worried on the one-arm swings that I'd accidentally let go and the kettlebell would fly into the TV, but luckily that didn't happen. I also banged my arm a couple times, so maybe I need some wrist pads or something.

My shoulders were also sore, but they seemed to be sore before I even started, so I'm guessing that's from yesterday's workout--Strike Zone with Tracey Staehle (which I loved, review to come soon).

Thanks to Betsy

I wanted to write a little note saying "Thanks" to Betsy of Girl Gone Healthy for giving me the idea to try new templates for my blog. She also had the idea to have a fig picture, so I went looking for one to stick on the blog. I really like the fig picture. Thanks, Betsy! And if you have any more lovely ideas, let me know. :)

New Workout Clothes!

I've been shopping a little again. I bought some new workout clothes from Nike.com in anticipation of the August Cathe Road Trip!

Here's what I got:

I first saw the pants on Cathe on her blog last July--I think when she was practicing for the 4-Day Split workouts. A lot of people loved these pants and she mentioned what kind they were (Nike Cropped Funky Vibe Pants). So I'm finally getting around to ordering some myself. I hope these fit o.k. so I can take them on the Road Trip.

Changing of the Blog

One of the reasons I haven't posted in the last couple days (besides just being busy) is that I am working on a new format for the blog. I found a free template and I've been fiddling with it a bit. As you can see, it's now up and ready. I don't know if I'll keep this long or not, but I've already put quite a bit of effort on this one, so I hate to change it now.

I'm going to continue my fun June rotation tomorrow. Here's the tentative (and fun) plan.

Monday............Cardio..................Strike Zone (Tracey Staehle)
Tuesday...........Total Body............Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Vol. 1 (Sarah Lurie)
Wednesday......Cardio..................step aerobics
Thursday.........Total Body............Circuit Zone (Tracey Staehle)
Friday..............Cardio..................step or kickboxing
Saturday..........Total Body...........All Pump (Amy Bento)
Sunday.............Rest

As you can see, it's now up and ready. I don't know if I'll keep this long or not, but I've already put quite a bit of effort on this one, so I hate to change it now.

I'm going to continue my fun June rotation tomorrow. Here's the tentative (and fun) plan.

Monday............Cardio..................Strike Zone (Tracey Staehle)
Tuesday...........Total Body............Kettlebells the Iron Core Way Vol. 1 (Sarah Lurie)
Wednesday......Cardio..................step aerobics
Thursday.........Total Body............Circuit Zone (Tracey Staehle)
Friday..............Cardio..................step or kickboxing
Saturday..........Total Body...........All Pump (Amy Bento)
Sunday.............Rest

How Long Do You Sleep at Night?

I'm about to go to bed, so I was thinking about how much sleep I need a night. Then I remembered this link my hubby sent me a couple days ago. "How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?"

Down a Bit More

I weighed myself today and I'm down a pound. Technically 1.2 (hey gotta love that little tiny extra bit). I'm surprised I haven't lost more on my new braces liquid diet, but of course I also haven't exercised and I've indulged in a few milkshakes, so I'm probably lucky to be down at all.

Suffering

Well, the Fitness Fig has been suffering this week. I got the braces on last Thursday, as I said, and the pain got worse as the day went on. Then it got worse again over the weekend. Agony when I tried to eat fries on Saturday. Of course, I have no business eating fries anyway, if I want to lose more weight. Instead I had a strawberry milkshake.... OK, I probably have no business with that either, but at least it didn't hurt at all.

In addition to the pain (and the tiring painkillers, though I was completely med-free today), there's been a hideous heat wave. I have no air conditioning. So have I been working out? No. I'm not one to work out in 90-something degree/very humid weather. I'm a big baby that way. Plus I'm not eating normally so I don't want to push my body too much on this weird liquid diet.

OK, now that I'm done with those excuses, my plan for tomorrow is to try the yoga class that I keep thinking I'll try. No sunburn from today's dermatologist visit, so I should be o.k. Hopefully they'll have a/c at the yoga studio.

Braces

I got braces today. Feels weird. And slightly painful. I think I'll survive, though. I can't believe I just got braces and I'm 33 years old. I know lots of adults do it nowadays, but it still seems like I'm pretty old to have a metal mouth.

I'm going to go eat something mushy now.

Nice Little Loss

Oops, forgot to mention that I lost 2.2 lbs this week. Woot!

Oral Surgery Brutality

Yikes. Just had 4 teeth out. I forgot how brutal and violent oral surgery is. They really just rip those things out with pliers, don't they? I mean, they did give me the local anesthetic, but it's still so rough. At least he didn't have to practically climb on the chair and stick a knee on my chest to pull them out like the Dutch doctor who once removed a tooth for me.

So it was done almost 2 hours ago and I still have some bleeding. Argh. I hope it stop soon so I can take a drink or something. Liquid diet for 24 hours. I have a feeling I won't work out for a day or two. Good thing I got up early to do the cardio premix from Cathe's Body Max 2 this morning.

I probably won't be online much once I start taking the painkillers, so I won't be able to comment on many other blogs, visit my favorite forums, or post much here. I'm going to go read that prescription now, actually. Hope everyone else is having a fabulous week.

Oh, and the orthodontist wants me to go ahead and put on the brace this Thursday?!?! Is that nuts or what? I made a tentative appointment, but we'll see.

Fun June

It's been a busy busy week on the old home front. T-ball games, home renovation plans, doctor visits, gardening, house-cleaning, etc.

Some online friends and I have recently decided to make our workouts fun again this month. Sometimes we get so obsessive with what we need to do that we don't really enjoy it, though usually we claim to love working out. So let the fun month begin!

This week I have planned my workouts very informally:

Monday: Lower Body (ended up doing Glute Camp by Tracey Staehle)
Tuesday: Cardio & possibly upper body if time allows
Wednesday: Yoga & upper body if it doesn't happen Tuesday
Thursday: Cardio
Friday: Total Body
Saturday: Cardio
Sunday: Rest
(or might rest on Saturday and do cardio on Sunday--go with the flow).

Of course, tomorrow I'm having 4 teeth ripped out by the oral surgeon (well, I hope they aren't actually ripped out, but gently removed) as a pre-orthodontics requirement (I'm getting braces!). So I don't know how I will feel after that and how it will affect working out. We'll see.

Dreaming of Malpractice Suits

I'm not really the litigious type, but I'm wondering if I've got a case for malpractice with the agony I've had from getting burned at the dermatologist's office.... I am still in agony over 48 hours later. I'm supposed to go back tomorrow. Yeah right. Not bloody likely.

I did not work out today. The painful friction between clothing and skin was enough to prevent it. I also had some terrible itching today. I ended up going to the drugstore and stocking up on a ton of itch relief products. Stuff to put in the bath, stuff to spray on, stuff to slather on, etc. They gave me some very brief relief, but nothing really helped for long.

I'm trying to focus on what I'll do when this nasty pain ceases. I'm planning my next rotation. I think I've got it pretty much planned out so I'll probably post that in the next couple of days.

Fitness Plan for This Week

It's already Wednesday but I'm just now listing my fitness plan. Here was the plan:

I've been faithfully following until today, when due to my sunburn I stayed home rather than trying yoga class. I didn't think sticking to my yoga mat with all my burned parts would be remotely pleasant. I'm still having a lot of sunburn pain, so we'll see how I feel in the morning to determine if I do my workout as planned. I'm so tired today after not sleeping well last night (then I took cold meds to help me sleep which just wore me out all day today) that I think I might go to bed soon (it's about 9:30pm here, pretty early for me to go to bed). Night all.

SparkPeople and Sunburn

I joined SparkPeople yesterday to try a new way to lose weight...again. I think I looked into it briefly a few months ago but never really tried it, so this is all still pretty new. I have actually gained 5 lbs since I restarted the Body for Life eating plan. Yikes. And that's not 5 lbs of muscle, unfortunately. Ugh. So I'm kicking BFL to the curb again and going back to the old faithful counting calories, fat, etc. It's a pain in the heinie, but maybe that's the only thing I can do to really lose weight. I probably need better portion control. Ugh again.

In other news today, strangely enough I got a sunburn at my dermatologist's office. I went for light therapy for my psoriasis. It turns out what I thought was eczema is actually guttate psoriasis*--a kind of skin condition related to having strep or other infections. Lucky me. I have no idea what started it since it's been awhile since I've had strep. Anyway, the treatment involves phototherapy--which is basically getting zapped with ultraviolet light at the doc's office. This is done in the buff. So they are shining a bright light on things that have never seen the sun (and that only saw a tanning bed once or twice in college). Yowza. Poor chest and back are all burny and itchy. I had just 20 seconds last Thursday and they bumped it up to 40 seconds today. Those must have been 40 pretty intense seconds. So here I am with a sunburn. At least they had me wear goggles and a pillowcase over my head so my face is o.k. Yeah, I get to wear a pillowcase over my head and stand in a machine naked like that. Fun. I probably look like a pale and lumpy torture victim--but now I'm a red and lumpy torture victim. At least my only tan lines will be where the pillowcase hits my neck. Except I probably won't tan. I'll burn and then it will turn a slightly less pale shade of white. Oy.

OK, enough of that. I can tell it's already helped some of my psoriasis spots, so that's good.

*No, I do not have it as bad as the dude in the picture on that website I linked.

Spider-Man Demonstrates Yoga Poses Part 5

I realized tonight that Spider-Man has been languishing on my kitchen counter without any yoga action for a few weeks now. I figured it was time to get him back to his practice so he could pose for us.

Here are two views of Spidey's Downward-Facing Dog. Maybe that second view is not one you want to see of the S-man, though. This is not one of those kinds of sites, after all.

I'm not sure what they call this one, but I'll just say he's doing a modified Side Angle Pose of some sort. Hey, I'm no yogi, I just do some videos and attend the occasional class.

Rambling Review of Circuit Zone

Have I mentioned yet how much I like Tracey Staehle's new Circuit Zone DVD? I think I've at least mentioned it, but I want to go into more detail. I was a little hesitant when I first ordered with her latest presale, but if the rest of them are like Circuit Zone, I feel much better about the purchase now. I also like what I've done of Core Blast, though I haven't done all the segments yet. Her other new workouts are not out yet (Strike Zone--a kickboxing workout I'm very excited about, Steady State Step, and Hi-Lo Med Ball--the only one I didn't order as I'm not a big hi-lo fan).

Circuit Zone has 7 regular circuits plus 5 bonus circuits sprinkled through it. I think when I ordered it I thought it was going to be a cardio/weights circuit, but it's not exactly that. There are some cardio moves--but like plyo exercises for the legs, not really straight up cardio. However, with the fast pace and intensity of the workout, I still burn about 400 calories, not bad for a little more than an hour of weight work. The DVD is full of variety, not just of moves, but of equipment. However, she also has 2 modifiers--one modifying to an easier level, and one kicking it up a notch. They also modify for different equipment. Fortunately I now have all the equipment used. A couple times it was hard to move stuff around and get ready for the next segment, but it wasn't too bad. It just took a quick pause to shift and then get going. I think it will go faster when I'm more familiar with the workout.

I'm trying to figure out why I love this workout so much. It's not a given that I love all Tracey's stuff as I've sold a few of her other workouts. There's something great about this workout, though. Like with favorites Amy Bento's Advanced Step Challenge II or Cathe's Low Impact Circuit, it's going to be the kind of workout I have to stop myself from doing more often. Maybe I should just give into those urges and do these favorites all the time instead of buying so many new workouts I don't even try.... There's an idea for my next rotation, I suppose.

Here's a sign of how much I like this workout--one of my favorite parts is the Bonus Tricep Burn circuit. I usually hate tricep work! She does this thing lying down on a foam roller and tossing a medicine ball around. I also like the lower body work, which is usually what I dread the most (especially after all my stupid injuries this past year). Yet, in spite of enjoying myself, I feel it the next day.

My only complaint about this workout is that I wish there was more bicep work. That part seems pretty fast to me. However, with the way the circuits are chaptered out, it's easy enough to replay it for more bicep work. I went heavier last time and will probably go even heavier next time to make it more challenging. Oh yeah, and those equipment changes are a little fast, so I guess that's sort of a second complaint, but it's not a big deal.

Note: I also posted a lot of this review over on the Circuit Zone page on Collage Video, so hopefully they'll print that one on there soon. I gave it 5 stars.
