Lainie's Good Life

I kind of wimped out on the Bosu: Long & Lean workout today because I was sore from previous workouts--backache today, too. That Bosu workout is great but a bit intense for a yoga thing. So I did Crunch: Pick Your Spot Pilates with Ellen Barrett. It's my favorite mat Pilates workout, and Ellen's only all-mat workout (as far as I know). I just love Ellen's stuff.

Tomorrow I'll be doing Cathe's High Step Circuit workout on my Bosu. It's one of her easier workouts, but doing it on the Bosu gives a little extra oomph to it, I think. Or maybe I just find it fun that way.

I'm still fighting a lot of fatigue. I realized what a big problem this was when I saw how many of my blogs have the fatigue label (see the labels list on the right side of the blog). I think I might not be getting very good sleep so I might have to go back to my doc about it. Friends have suggested maybe I need to do a sleep study. We'll see. I don't know how I can arrange time to sleep away from home at some clinic, though (which is what I think a sleep study would involve).

This evening I'm chilling in my Kermit and Miss Piggy pajamas catching up on old 30 Rock episodes. Life is good.

High Stepping on my Bosu

Today I did Cathe's High Step Challenge workout, modifying it to use my Bosu instead of the high step as much as possible. It was my first workout in several days (because of holiday activities plus illness) so it was tough to get through it, but I managed. Not only did I get another chance to bounce around on my Bosu, I also got to try out my new Ryka shoes and my new barbell set. The shoes felt great. I was a little worried they would be too small on my right big toe but they were fine. I liked the ankle support and the cushioning. The barbell also worked out well. It was so much easier to adjust the plates than it was using my husband's barbell (I had to use pliers to change out weights with that one!)

Starting in January I think I'll be starting a new rotation using Cathe's 4-Day Split workouts. I'll write more about that later.

Feeling Blah Day--Tracey Staehle to the Rescue!

Today was one of those days. You know those days, don’t you? I woke up tired. My toddler had climbed out of his crib--no longer an option to let him play in his bed a while before letting him up. So I dragged myself downstairs to start my day. Must get coffee. Still blah. It was also a grey and rainy day, which certainly didn’t help. My husband was firmly ensconced across the length of the couch watching college football (and falling asleep). This is understandable since he just returned from two back-to-back overseas trips. So I was feeling just generally unmotivated and considered skipping my workout altogether. Why not have a rest day today instead of tomorrow?
But somehow I talked myself into it and I chose Tracey Staehle’s Sculpt Sweatfest, which I just got last week and hadn’t had a chance to try yet. Part of what convinced me to do this one is that it uses the Bosu for a few things, and I haven’t gotten to use my new Bosu much yet. Well, what a surprising workout! I didn’t really know what to expect--thought it was just a standard weights workout, but it was different. The first section is floor work and low weight or no weight stuff--lots of core work. It actually reminded me a lot of Tracy Effinger’s Squeeze DVD. The second section has a little bit standing, parts using the Bosu, parts using the stability ball, and at least one part using both Bosu and ball (tricep dips, which I had to modify with just a chair and Bosu). I do think a lot of the workout could be done even if you don’t have the Bosu or ball. I know a lot of fitness enthusiasts do have stability balls, but fewer have Bosus. Overall I was very pleased with the workout (and sore) and I’m glad that I went ahead and preordered her new workouts, which should come in early November. I also went ahead and ordered her High Intensity Step Mix which I look forward to stumbling through (if my ankle can take it).

So a blah day and I managed to get through a decent workout. Tomorrow is my usual official rest day (though I might play around with learning some new step combos from one of the workouts I haven’t mastered).

I Have a Bosu Now

I have been thinking about getting a Bosu Balance Trainer for a while now, and I’ve finally just gone ahead and done it. It looks like fun but I haven’t really tried it out yet (except stepping up and down a bit and attempting some balancing).

The Bosu is supposed to be great for balance training and core strengthening. It can be used for cardio workouts as well as strength training.

My main interest in getting a Bosu is that I’ve preordered a couple new workouts that are coming out soon (probably be shipped by the end of the month) which use the Bosu. Both also have the option of using a step instead, but I decided I wanted to go ahead and have the full experience, so I got the Bosu (also sometimes called a dome). One is Tracey Staehle’s new DVD: The Parts Series, which includes some Bosu work. I have also preordered her High Intensity Step Mix 2 workout, which uses a step rather than a Bosu. You can see clips of both new DVDs here. The other is Amy Bento’s new series, which uses the Bosu on her Hi-Lo Dome Challenge. Click here to find out more about all Amy’s new workouts.

Do any of my readers have a Bosu? Feel free to add a comment if you want to review your Bosu experience for us.
